Yogi Bhajan brought his Kundalini yoga teachings to the West in the 1960’s. Kundalini yoga (aka “The Yoga of Awareness“) powerfully connects movement, breathwork, and mantras which balance hormones, metabolism, and the nervous system; thus working to upgrade & refresh our minds and bodies to handle the stresses of this digital age. Did we mention it does wonders for spicing up your sex life?!
Here’s some background…
According to the Kundalini Research Institute, “Kundalini” is an ancient Sanskrit word for ‘coiled snake’. Eastern religion believed that everyone possessed a divine energy at the base of the spine. This energy is something we are born with, but we must put in work to uncoil our own snake. That’s where Kundalini Yoga comes in…It’s the practice of “awakening our Higher Self and turning potential energy into kinetic energy.”
Increasing in popularity
Kundalini yoga is on the mainstream fast track. Celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson, Alicia Keyes, Russell Brand, and Orlando Bloom post selfies all over the country taking classes. White Sun, an inspiring and energizing Kundalini band, won a Grammy last month for their incredibly energizing album, White Sun ll. Meanwhile in Venice, CA, the hip Guru Jagat has successfully opened two Kundalini studios, a record label, online class platform, and now shares Kundalini’s most powerful teachings in her first book, Invincible Living. Her book discusses everything from beauty and self-care to work and relationships.
A few Kundalini Yoga techniques you can explore in the bedroom…
“People think that you either have a good sex life or you don’t, but it’s just like training for a marathon—you have to practice to be successful,” says Jagat, “Healing your sexuality is some of the deepest work you can do. People have a lot of resistance to it, yet everyone feels like they’re missing out on something more…and they are.”
- Just as you connect with your own breath in your yoga practice, make eye contact and coordinate your breath with your partner’s. This will help align both your the energies.
- Loosen the hips and create deep connection with your cervix by flowing through cat and cow postures at a rapid pace: As you inhale, arch your back and lift your chest; on the exhale, round your back and pull your navel towards your spine.
- Use the ‘sat kriya’ technique to release tension and open up your body’s energetic pleasure centers.
Kundalini is said to yield the best results if practiced during what are called the ‘ambrosial hours‘ (the two and a half hours just before sunrise), when the sun is at a sixty-degree angle to the Earth, “It’s easier to meditate and concentrate before the hustle and bustle of the day begins”.
